A “Repair Don’t Replace” Story: Transit line fixes roof water penetration problem with Eneseal coating instead of replacing the roof of the train.

A metropolitan transit line that carries thousands of riders each day was having a big problem with water penetrating into the passenger area of their cars. It would cost about $40,000.00 to replace the roofs and would also take about a month each. A new car was not an option because that was about 2-3 million dollars.

The Director of Technical Services asked us if we could help. Other attempts at sealing the roofs had not worked.

We suggested a water sealing approach using ENESEAL® CR and ENESEAL® HR and a test was done. The products were applied and the test set of cars was sent through a train washer. Have you ever seen a train washer? They pounded that train car with water for 30 minutes and it passed the test. 185 sets of cars were then coated the same way.

In case you are curious, ENESEAL® HR is a water based, liquid ceramic-filled membrane which cures to a durable, seamless, flexible “skin” that refracts and reflects heat while providing a moisture resistant barrier to virtually any type of surface.

ENESEAL® CR is a single component, water based, liquid coating which dries to a highly durable, corrosion resistant, elastomeric ‘skin’ that provides extraordinary environmental protection.

The Technical Services Director was very pleased with our solution because it will allow him to extend the life of the cars, save over $33,000.00 compared to replacing the roofs, and it only required the car be out of service for five days.
